The course is divided into the following areas: Assessment All units are assessed through written examination: ASD units (1 hour 30 minutes), A2 units (1 hour 45 minutes).
Practical skills are assessed externally during Year 13.
Brief outline of the course structure and assessment AS level The course is taught by Dr Ford and Dr Caulfield.
Students will be required to sit 2 exams based on the following: Career Opportunities and Additional Information Chemistry is a requirement for medical degrees and many related fields e.g. It would also be an advantage for the following: veterinary science, zoology, engineering, environmental science, archaeology, forensic science and many more.
Subject: Chemistry Level: AS and A LEVEL Exam Board: W. Analytical techniques, widely used in the detection of drugs and environmental monitoring, are also studied.
The course looks at the beneficial role chemistry plays in society for example the manufacture of polymers such as polyester and nylon and pharmaceutical products like aspirin.Once solid dissolved, weigh the watch glass and filter paper, use the filter paper to carry out suction filtration, place crystals on watch glass, weigh the dried crystal and calculate the weight of the aspirin. Then, determine the melting point of aspirin using necessary apparatus.Requirement/Skills for entry to the course Chemistry component of Core Science GCSE – B or above Chemistry component of Additional Science GCSE – B or above GCSE Maths – B or above. To succeed at A level Chemistry you must be conscientious, have excellent attendance and be prepared to try your best.Students must be prepared to apply the knowledge, understanding and skills specified in a range of theoretical, practical, industrial and environmental context.Practical work is an intrinsic part of this specification. For preparation of Aspirin, acetic anhydride is added to the measured amount of salicylic acid.Sulphuric acid is added and heated for a short period to complete reaction. The emphasis of this course is on developing understanding and applying knowledge to explain modern applications of chemistry. The specification is divided into chemical topics, each containing different key concepts of chemistry.
